College water polo: UCI players honored
UC Irvine water polo players John Dorfi and Chris Kirchwehm
received All-American recognition from the American Water Polo Coaches
Association.
Dorfi, a senior, was named to the third team after scoring 29 goals
for the Anteaters this season.
Kirchwehm, also a senior, earned a spot on the honorable mention list
after scoring a team-leading 45 goals for UCI.
Both players were five-year members of the UCI program, sitting out as
redshirts during the 1997 season.
“They both did a good job and really held things together this year,”
UCI Coach Ted Newland said. “They both played really well. They both have
grown up a lot and they understand what they are trying to do. I’m really
proud of both of them. They have made a lot of progress.”
UCI finished 7-15 overall this season and took eighth at the Mountain
Pacific Sports Federation Tournament in Berkeley, Nov. 23-25.
Tony Azevedo of Stanford was named Player of the Year and Dante
Dettamanti earned Coach of the Year honors for leading the Cardinals
(22-1) to the NCAA title.
