Girls basketball: Depleted CdM falls
SAN CLEMENTE -- The Corona del Mar High girls basketball team,
playing without injured standouts Jackie McCoy and Andrea Gruber, fell
56-30 to Laguna Hills in pool play at the San Clemente Tournament
Wednesday.
McCoy, a junior who earned first-team All-Pacific Coast League and
All-Newport-Mesa District laurels last season, strained a knee in
Friday’s loss to Orange Lutheran and will undergo and MRI this week, CdM
Coach Elbert Davis said.
Gruber, a senior returning starter, suffered a cut under her eye that
is affecting her vision.
Davis said McCoy could be lost anywhere between two weeks and the
season, while Gruber will miss at least the remainder of the San Clemente
Tournament.
Senior Courtney Kawata and junior Kelliann Klein led CdM (3-4) with
seven points apiece Wednesday.
