WESTMINSTER - Corona del Mar High boys basketball coach Ryan Curry

utilized back-to-back timeouts to get across a simple four-word message

that seemed to sum up what troubled his Sea Kings in a 72-39 trouncing by

Buena Park Thursday in the consolation semifinals of the La Quinta

Tournament.

“Play with some heart,” Curry barked at his downtrodden troops, whose

inability to break the first timeout huddle with a crisp chant of “Sea

Kings,” prompted Curry to immediately call a 30-second timeout, resummon

his players before him and vent a little frustration over their apparent

indifference to being devoured by the Coyotes.

CdM (1-3) was overwhelmed from the outset as Buena Park (5-2) rolled

off first-quarter runs of 9-2, 6-0 and 8-0 en route to a 23-6 edge after

eight minutes.

The Coyotes built the lead to 20 at halftime, led, 55-22, after three

periods and pushed the lead to 38, before the Sea Kings finished the game

with an 8-3 run.

Corona del Mar, which will play Santa Ana Saturday at 12:30 p.m. for

11th place, hit five three-pointers in the final 7:35, after connecting

on just 2 of 17 from beyond the arc the first three quarters.

Shooting woes plagued the Sea Kings, who finished 30.8% from the field

(16 of 52) against Buena Park’s constant defensive harassment.

After Brandon Sherick-Odom sank a layup with 4:09 left in the first

half, the Sea Kings went more than eight minutes before netting another

two-point field goal. Before Justin Wald’s layup with 44 seconds left in

the game, the Sea Kings had only two Pancho Seaborn runners to show for

their shooting performance inside the arc in the final 20 minutes.

They did produce seven three-pointers during that stretch to keep the

score from getting even more out of hand.

Kevin Mancillas hit all three of his three-point tries in the final

quarter to finish with a team-high 15 points.

Buena Park also won the rebounding battle, 44-28, and earned the edge

in turnovers, as well, 21-14.
