Boys basketball: Tars hold off Agoura
NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High senior Tony Melum scored a
season-high 35 points to help the Sailors hold off Agoura, 65-60, in the
first round of pool play at the Bill Reynolds Classic Monday on the
Sailors’ floor.
The Tars (3-1), bouncing back from a 55-53 nonleague loss to Los
Alamitos Saturday, extended a 35-30 halftime lead with a 20-5 blitz in
the third quarter, then held on as the Chargers outscored them in the
final period, 20-13.
Sophomore Jamie Diefenbach came off the bench to add a spark on
defense and on the boards, according to Newport Coach Larry Hirst.
The Sailors continue pool play Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Rancho
Verde, which was defeated Monday by Upland, 67-43.
