AYSO Region 57: Newport Storm earns playoff victory
The Newport Storm overwhelmed the Killer Bees, 1-0, in an AYSO
Region 57 boys under-10 playoff soccer game Monday.
Taylor Epp scored the only goal of the game on a breakaway. Randall
Mycorn was strong on defense. Goalkeepers Karl Fletcher and Mathew
Crittenden made numerous key saves to preserve the shutout.
Tough defensive play and aggressive offense was turned in by Ned
Atkins, Austin Barvin, Misha Pakvasa, Patrick Schoenberg and Justin
Tucker.
In boys under-10 action:
* Mako Sharks 8, Lightning Bolts 1 - Nick Taormina scored three goals
and Chris Freeman had two to lead the Mako Sharks to their 12th
consecutive victory and third straight regional playoff win Monday.
David Fenner, Ryan Peyton and Braydon Blackford each scored a goal.
Midfielders Sebastien Welch and Cameron Koppel kept control of the field
without defensive fullback Ian Massoth, who was injured.
Saahm Aresh, Taylor Battram and Chandler Mitchell were instrumental in
protecting the Sharks’ net.
The Mako Sharks have their next playoff game on Saturday.
In Division 5 girls action:
* Chicklets 4, The Rip Girls 1 - Jillian Taylor led the way for the
Chicklets with three goals, and teammate Brynn Johnson scored a goal.
Madison Simmonds had two assists. Laura Fleming scored the The Rip Girls’
goal.
Among other standouts in Tuesday’s match were Alexa Cohen and Kelly
Marshall of the Chicklets, and The Rip Girls’ Lauren Smits.
