Boys water polo: CdM edges Newport in summer tourney
MISSION VIEJO - The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team made
the first splash in the rivalry with Newport Harbor.
The Sea Kings, led by Artie Dorr’s four goals, defeated the Sailors,
10-6, in the CAT Boys 18-and-under Tournament Friday at Saddleback
College.
John Mann added two goals for CdM, while Marcello Pantuliano, Bobby
Messenger, David DiRocco and John DiRocco each added single goals.
Goalies Beau Stockstill and Sherwin Kim combined for eight saves.
Newport was led by two goals from Brent Armstrong and single goals by
Nathan Weiner, Ross Sinclair, Michael Bury and Thomas Butman. Goalies
Nathan McLain and Alex Stabler combined for four saves.
In other action, CdM defeated Carlsbad, 10-4, Saturday as Kim and
Stockwell were strong in net, compiling 15 saves.
Mann led the offense with four goals, Messenger added two goals. The
DiRocco brothers each had one goal, as did Dorr and Pantuliano.
Newport Harbor also met Carlsbad on Saturday, and dropped a 10-9
decision.
Weiner had three goals and Armstrong, Bury and Michael Vanderburg
scored twice.
Stabler was credited with five goals.
