Football: Tars get pumped up for 2001 season

NEWPORT BEACH - Sure, they look good at the beach, but that’s not
the reason why the Newport Harbor High football team has been slaving
away in the weight room these past few months.
“We have a tradition here at Newport Harbor when it comes to team
strength,” Sailors’ strength coach Mike Bargas said, following Newport’s
recent summer weightlifting camp. “These guys are trying to uphold and
maintain that reputation. We don’t have any huge superstars, but we had a
good showing this year.”
The camp, hosted by Newport Harbor and attended by Tustin, Loara and
Esperanza, had numerous Sailors among the various weight classes.
Senior standout Joe Foley had the most impressive performance in the
231-and-over weight class when he clean-and-jerked 319 pounds, equaling
Alan Saenz’s school record set last year.
In the 187 class, senior Dave Marshall (253 pounds), senior Morgan
Craig (242) and senior Tyler Miller (236) swept the top three spots for
the Sailors, as did junior Jimmy Sanchez (264), senior Nick Iverson (250)
and senior Jim Rothwell (220) in the 170 class.
Another Sailors’ sweep came in the 136 class with sophomores Conrad
Williamson (160 pounds), Dave Christiansen (154) and Garrett Guiney (154)
finishing 1-2-3.
Junior Jose Munoz led the way for Harbor in the 152 class with a 203-pound performance.
Sophomore Kyle Cody took second in the 123 class with a lift of 121
pounds, while teammate Morgan Govaars placed third at 115 pounds.
