PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Sometimes, what may seem like the smallest of stories are the most

touching. It’s not every day that there’s a big fire or a presidential

visit, but there are, always, stories to tell in the communities that we

cover.

On this day, one of my assignments was to photograph a family caring

for three two-week-old kittens whose mother had disappeared. It’s

something most of us have experienced in one way or another, dealing with

a traumatic situation involving the family pet, and yet it’s something

that more often than not will never appear in the paper.

As I sat with the family in their living room, listening to them

describe how hard it is to care for the kittens and how upset they are

over the mysterious loss of the mother cat, I thought about my own pets

and how much I care about them. And I thought of how to these people, on

this day, this situation is probably much more important and pressing

than anything else going on in the world around them.

I really do hope that the little kittens grow up happy and healthy,

and that the mother cat returns home. And I hope that somehow our

coverage of their story helps them to this end.
