Prep football: Mandarino adds to All-Star duty
Newport Harbor High senior Chris Manderino, already selected to
play in the Orange County All-Star Football Game, will also represent
Orange County in the Los Angeles-Orange County Charity Football Classic,
scheduled July 28 at Cerritos College.
Manderino, the Newport-Mesa District Most Valuable Player and an
All-CIF Southern Section Division VI selection, led the Sailors to
back-to-back section title games.
He was the starting quarterback in 1999, when the Tars went 13-0-1 and
won the section crown, but shifted to tailback early in his senior
campaign. He rushed for 2,141 yards and scored 31 touchdowns to help the
Sailors finish 11-3.
He will walk on at UC Berkeley.
Frank Mazzotta of La Habra High will coach the Orange County team
against a Los Angeles County team guided by Marijon Ancich from St. Paul.
Erik Meyer from La Mirada High, which Newport Harbor upset in the
Division VI semifinals, 35-16, is among those who will play for Los
Angeles County.
