Prep baseball: Eagle PCL Co-MVP

Corona del Mar High junior center fielder Billy Eagle, whose

offensive production and defensive wizardry helped lead the Sea Kings to

their first outright league championship in at least 19 years, is the Pacific Coast League Co-MVP, as chosen by the circuit’s coaches.

Eagle, who shared the top honor with USC-bound Jay Nichols, a senior

center fielder from University High, heads a list of 12 Newport-Mesa

athletes recognized on the first and second teams.

Eagle, who was a first-team All-PCL performer as a sophomore, is

joined on the first team by teammate and fellow first-team repeater Cavan

Cuyler, a senior pitcher.

CdM senior outfielder Dave Knecht, a second-team choice last year, is

also on the first team, as is CdM senior first baseman Andrew Johns,

Costa Mesa junior pitcher-outfielder Nick Cabico, Mesa senior center

fielder Josh Feldman and Estancia senior pitcher-catcher Brent Davis.

CdM seniors Eric Snell and Rory McKeever, as well as Sea King

sophomore Keith Long, are second-team honorees.

The second team also includes Costa Mesa seniors Carlos Franco and

Daniel Hunter.

Snell played third base and pitched, McKeever caught and Long played

shortstop for the Sea Kings.

Franco played first base and was the Mustangs’ closer, while Hunter

handled chores behind the plate.

Costa Mesa finished third in league and advanced to the CIF Southern

Section Division IV quarterfinals.

Snell and Franco were second-team honorees as juniors.
