Girls track and field: CdM takes care of University

CORONA DEL MAR - It appears that anything Corona del Mar High girls
track and field standout Jaycee Mahler wants to accomplish, she’ll do it.
“She came up to me and told me she wanted to try the long jump,” Coach
Bill Sumner said following his team’s 72.5-63.5 win over visiting
University. “I said, ‘Yeah, sure, go ahead’ and she ripped out a
14-foot-10 jump in practice. That caught my eye.”
Mahler improved on that with a 15-2 to win the event, edging teammate
Jacqueline Thayer (15-0). “She believes she can hit 16-0 before the
year’s out and I wouldn’t bet against her,” Sumner said.
The senior soccer standout also prevailed in both the 100 hurdles
(16.4) and 300 (48.1) hurdles.
Joining Mahler in the multiple wins included Julie Allen. Allen pulled
out wins in the 1,600 meters with a 5:11.2, edging out fellow Sea King
Diana Hossfeld (5:11.8). She followed that up with a victorious 3,200
(11:39.6), bettering the field by nearly seven seconds.
Jenny Cummins and Kinzie Kramer went 1-2 in the 400. Cummins came in
with a 1:00.5, while Kramer finished with a personal-best 1:03.2.
Thayer crossed the finish line a tenth of a second ahead of CdM
teammate Kramer in the 200 (27.6).
Hossfeld was victorious in the 800 (2:24.1), while Alison Brawner
(high jump, 5-6) and Krisserin Canary (pole vault, 9-6) also pulled out
first-place marks.
