CORONA DEL MAR - She may wear soccer attire, but as of now, Jaycee

Mahler is a member of the Corona del Mar High girls track and field team

and Coach Bill Sumner is a happier man because of it.

The senior standout placed first in three events and ran the opening

leg of the victorious 400-meter relay team to pace the Sea Kings (4-1),

ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division III.

“If you need salsa at your party, you bring Jaycee,” Sumner said of

his spicy sprinter. Seriously, no words can describe what type of athlete

she is. She’s one of the best athletes we’ve ever had at this school and

it’s great seeing her succeed the way she is.”

Mahler edged out teammate Krisserin Canary in the 100 (13.2), she

topped the field in both the 100 (16.9) and 300 low hurdles (48.4).

Before that, Mahler, along with Jaclyn Thayer, Canary and Jenny

Cummins) bettered the Timberwolves (0-4) in the 400 relay with a time of

52.6.

Canary was a double winner, taking first in the triple jump

(29-feet-6) and the pole vault (10-0).

In the 800, Julie Allen (2:22.0) and Diana Hossfeld (2:26.0) trailed

Northwood’s Jordan Becktold after the first lap before turning on the

jets for a 1-2 finish.

“I was surprised to see Julie run so fast in the 800,” Sumner said.

“She’s been working hard on a fast start in the 1,600 and that takes a

lot out of you.”

Jenny Cummins edged Becktold in the 400, while freshman Kinzie Kramer

took first in the 200 (27.5) and ran the open leg of the victorious 1,600

relay with Katherine Morse, Jenny and Becky Cummins (4:17.9).

“She’s definitely a shining star for our future,” Sumner said of

Kramer. “She’s still learning, but she’s got a lot of talent. She’ll go a

long way in this program.”

In the field events, Stephanie Kendrick won the long jump (13-10) and

took second in the high jump (4-10), behind fellow Sea King Allison

Brawner (5-2).

Season Meservey (12:18.9) and Katie Quinlan (12:20.3) led the Sea

Kings to a 1-2 finish in the 3,200.

“If we stay healthy, we should be the team to beat in league,” Sumner

predicted.
