Yardley selected to Michigan Sports Hall of Fame

George Yardley, a Newport Harbor High basketball standout and NBA

legend, will be inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame at a May

24 dinner at the Cobo Conference Center in Detroit, Mich.

Yardley, who became a member of the NBA Hall of Fame for his strong

play with the Detroit Pistons, will join fellow Michigan stars Dan

Dierdorf (football), George Gervin (basketball), John Harrington (prep

football coach), J.P. McCarthy (broadcaster), Jack Morris (baseball) and

Wayne Walker (football).

After a solid career at Newport Harbor and Stanford University,

Yardley played for the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons and was a star when the

team moved to Detroit in 1957. That year, he became the first player in

NBA history to score over 2,000 points in one season (2,001).

Yardley was enshrined in to the NBA Hall of Fame in 1996. He was

elected to Michigan’s Sports Hall of Fame by the Legends Council last

October.
