Mayor coins new fund-raiser for City Hall

Fountain Valley Mayor Larry Crandall will unveil a new fund-raising

drive called Coins for the Fountains at his mayor’s breakfast this

morning.

Inspired by “Three Coins in the Fountain,” the 1954 Academy

Award-winning movie where three women make wishes for romance at the

fountain of Trevi, Crandall said that initially, it was a resident that

made the suggestion to raise funds for the fountain.

“A resident first suggested we do pennies for the fountain,” Crandall

said. “At that suggestion, the movie popped into my head so we decided to

call it Coins for the Fountain.”

Crandall will ask that the residents of Fountain Valley join in with

the City Council in an effort to collect coins to help offset the cost of

the new fountain scheduled to be built for the civic center complex.

City officials have said both the complex and the fountain are

expected to be completed in the fall of this year.

“Even though we have a major contribution from a Fountain Valley

corporation, this program will provide the citizens with an opportunity

to have a fun and inexpensive way to participate in the project,”

Crandall said.

Crandall asked that residents drop off any loose change and extra

coins at City Hall, the Police Department lobby, the recreation center

and city fire stations.

“Frank Sinatra recorded the song three coins in the fountain, which

one will the fountain bless,” Crandall said. “My hope is that the

residents’ coins will bless our new fountain.”

Crandall added that there is no goal in mind as to how much to raise.
