Boys basketball: Serven will coach South All-Stars
COSTA MESA - Bob Serven, who led the Costa Mesa High boys
basketball team to a share of its first league title in the school’s 41
varsity seasons, will coach the South in the Orange County All-Star
Basketball Game, scheduled April 28 at Orange Coast College.
Serven guided the Mustangs to a 17-10 season, which ended with a 64-44
loss to La Canada in the second round of the CIF Southern Section
Division III-AA playoffs.
It was the second straight 17-win season for Costa Mesa, for which the
single-season victory record is 18.
Bob Terry from Brea Olinda will coach the North boys.
Serven came to Costa Mesa after six seasons as an assistant at Santa
Margarita, where he ran the defense. With Serven’s help, the Eagles won
section championships in 1994, ’96 and ’98 and claimed a state crown in
‘98.
Serven twice won Sea View League Coach of the Year honors in four
seasons as head coach at Newport Harbor, where his teams went 58-49 and
shared the league crown in 1990.
Serven is 34-20 at Mesa, which shared the PCL crown with University
this season.
Nicole Quinn (Santa Ana Valley) and Wayne Carlson (El Dorado) will
coach the South and North girls, respectively.
