BEHIND THE SCENES
* NAME: Becky and Bill Dahl
* HOME: Simi Valley
* JOB TITLE: Professional hospitality and registration
* THEY ARE: Taking care of the Classic’s professional players, looking
after everything from hotel reservations to restaurant suggestions
* DAILY DUTIES: The Dahls, both longtime golf fans, welcome the pros
and their families, put together information packages that include tips
on evening activities. They also help to deal with requests or complaints
about hotel rooms. Not that that’s a problem in Newport Beach.
“All the pros love to come here,” Becky Dahl said. “I see [the Toshiba
Senior Classic] becoming the jewel of the senior tour.”
As hospitality veterans for golf tournaments, the Dahls are
sought-after volunteers.
“We’ve done this for so long,” Becky Dahl said, adding that the couple
will move on to the next stop on the senior tour, Valencia, after the
Newport Beach tournament ends. “We know [players’] children and their
grandkids.”
While the couple doesn’t have any secret tips about things to do in
Newport Beach, the course’s closeness to Fashion Island fulfills the
wishes of most of their clients. And the Dahls themselves have also
fallen in love with the town.
“Everything’s so neat,” Becky Dahl said. “It’s beautiful. It’s the
perfect community.”
* DID YOU KNOW: While all professional players pay a $100 registration fee to compete in the tournament, they’re guaranteed to make at least
$700. And with only 78 players competing, the odds to take home the
$210,000 grand prize aren’t bad at all.
