NEWPORT BEACH -- Seven lucky high school seniors will each head off to
college in the fall with a new laptop computer and $2,500.
In its second year, the Toshiba Senior Classic scholarship awards
program has selected seniors from four of Newport-Mesa Unified School
District’s high schools, as well as three students from Irvine.
Natalie Newton from Costa Mesa High School, Anh Do from Estancia High
School, Jeani Hunt-Gibbon from Newport Harbor High School and Jennifer
Shim from Corona del Mar High School were among the recipients named this
year.
“When I first heard that I was a winner, I couldn’t believe it,” Shim
said. “I had to pinch myself.”
The scholarship program, created to complement the Toshiba Senior
Classic golf tournament in Newport Beach, is funded through the
tournament’s sponsor, Toshiba, and the Classic’s main fund-raising
beneficiary, Hoag Hospital.
Each student was awarded a $2,500 scholarship for school and a Toshiba
notebook computer.
“I’ve been worrying about a computer,” Shim said. “I have one, but
it’s very slow and I’m just glad I can take some of the burden off my
parents, and it helps me feel more confident.”
Shim hopes to head on to UCLA or UC San Diego. Two students from each
high school were nominated for the scholarship award by school
administrators.
To be eligible for the award, seniors had to rank in the upper half of
their graduating class, have two recommendations from school staff, and
demonstrate leadership, involvement and community service.
