Orange County Superintendent of Schools John F. Dean on Thursday

announced his plans to retire in April.

Dean, a Newport Beach resident and former principal at Harbor View

Elementary School and Orange Coast College dean, became superintendent in

1991.

During his 50 years as an educator, Dean also has served on the board

of directors of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian since 1972 and was

president of the California Reading Assn.

A selection committee to seek Dean’s replacement has been named.

“I have the utmost confidence in the Orange County Board of Education

as the members will deliberate and finally appoint my replacement for

this current term,” Dean said in a statement. “I trust they will select a

qualified candidate who will continue to build on what we have begun.”
