Boys volleyball: Sorrells makes return
COSTA MESA - Costa Mesa High has named Dave Sorrells boys
volleyball coach, according to Athletic Director Kirk Bauermeister.
Sorrells replaces Jon Carlew, who coached the Mustangs in 1996-97 and
again in 2000.
It’s a return to Mesa for Sorrells, who coached the Mustangs’ girls
program from 1995-96.
“I’d have to say I’m pretty excited,” Sorrells said. “Hopefully, the
boys will get my message. The boys are going to play harder than they
ever have and it’s going to be a program that people in this area can be
proud of. The winning will take care of itself.”
Following his first stint at Mesa, Sorrells spent one season at La
Habra High in 1997, where he led the girls team to the Freeway League
title and a trip to the CIF Southern Section Division III title match.
Since then, Sorrells has been involved with the beach volleyball
circuit, working with such players as Olympic gold medalists Dane Blanton
and Eric Fonoimoana.
Girls volleyball coach Darlene Bailey will assist Sorrells with the
junior varsity program.
