Sailors win opener, 9-2
NEWPORT BEACH - Tournament host Newport Harbor rolled into
Saturday’s semifinals with two victories on Thursday at the Gray Lunde
Frosh/Soph Water Polo Tournament.
The Sailors whipped Marina High’s Vikings, 9-2, then put Simi Valley
away, 10-3, in the first day of action Thursday.
Against Marina Coach Les Cutler’s Sailors were led by Brent Armstrong,
who scored four goals, as well as Nathan Weiner, who scored twice in the
second quarter.
Michael Vanderburg and Charlie Hockenbury each scored a goal.
Simi Valley fell victim to Vanderburg’s three goals, with Steffan Lugo
and Hockenburg each netting two goals. Nathan Werner, Ross Sinclair,
Clark Brooks and Eric Ferree each had a single goal.
Alex Stabler (four) and Nathan McLain (six) combined for 10 saves in
the two victories.
The Sailors’ semifinals matchup will be at 9:40 a.m. Saturday.
Also in lightweight water polo, Wednesday, Corona del Mar’s junior
varsity dropped an 8-6 Pacific Coast League decision to visiting
University. Tom Harper scored two goals and single tallies were produced
by John Edgett, Brandon Powers, Travis Hersh and Adam Padilla. Alan
Moherman had five saves.
