Girls tennis: Newport jolts Irvine, 15-3
IRVINE - Freshman Vanessa Dunlap of Newport Harbor High swept at
No. 3 singles, while two doubles teams swept Thursday as the Sailors
defeated host Irvine, 15-3, in the Sea View League girls tennis opener.
Erika Buder and Krista McIntosh won all three sets at No. 1 doubles
for Newport Harbor (4-3, 1-0 in league) and improved to 6-0 as a team.
The Tars’ No. 3 doubles team of freshmen A.J. Olson and Bonnie Adams also
swept against Irvine, running their 2000 mark to 17-1.
“Doubles won eight out of nine sets for us. We’ve been doing that
pretty consistently,” said Sailors Coach Fletcher Olson, whose team plays
matches next week against Laguna Hills (Tuesday at home), Laguna Beach
and Woodbridge, then competes in the CdM-Pavilions All-American Classic.
For Irvine (3-5, 0-1), freshman Evelyn Liaw won two singles sets,
losing only to Dunlap, 6-4. Dunlap enjoyed her first sweep of the
campaign.
