Newport Harbor High’s girls volleyball team sweeps Back Bay and Sea

View League rival Corona del Mar, 15-13, 15-9, 15-6. The Sailors are led

by Jennifer Carey, who amasses 13 kills, five blocks, eight digs and two

aces. Kelly Campbell has 17 kills for the Sea Kings.

Campbell gets 18 kills and 10 assists to lead CdM past El Toro’s girls

volleyball team, 15-11, 15-10, 15-4 in its league opener.

Julie Hecker has seven kills and 17 assists to pace Newport’s girls

volleyball team in a 16-14, 15-8, 15-4 sweep of league rival Irvine.

Costa Mesa boys water polo player James Comfort’s goal with 30 seconds

Estancia’s boys water polo team captures the Magnolia Tournament title

with an 11-10 win over Cerritos. Mark Stephens and Chad Bollenbach each

get four goals for the Eagles.

Costa Mesa’s football team shuts out Brea Olinda, 14-0. Ryan Park

leads the Mustangs’ defense. Quoc Pham scores two Mesa touchdowns,

including one on a 73-yard punt return.

Newport Harbor’s defense, led by linebacker Darin Mangnall, gives the

Sailors’ football team a 14-6 nonleague victory over La Habra. Russell

Olshefski and George Greenwalt score Newport’s touchdowns.

CdM’s football team just gets by Trabuco Hills, 10-9, on a 24-yard Tom

Hess field goal. Jeff Wegener’s 39-yard touchdown reception from Todd

Kehrli is CdM’s lone touchdown.

CdM’s girls tennis team staggers Estancia, 13-5. The Sea Kings’

doubles team of Michelle McFarland and Courtney Strauss fail to drop a

game.

Estancia’s girls tennis team recovers with a 13-5 victory over Laguna

Beach in its Pacific Coast League opener. Jeanne Shobe and Samantha

Joyner team to sweep in doubles for Estancia.

CdM’s boys cross country team wins the small school division in the

Laguna Hills Invitational. Mike Marumoto’s is the top finisher for the

Sea Kings. His second-place time of 15:34 is just four seconds behind the

winner. Mike Hancock has Newport’s best finish with a 16:18, good for

seventh place. The Sailors placed third as a team.

CdM’s girls volleyball team sweeps Mater Dei. Lara Carlsen’s 10 kills

leads the Sea Kings.

Estancia’s girls volleyball team sweeps Mission Viejo behind 13 kills
