AYSO Region 97 soccer: ??
Vanesa Gordon of the Ice Demons started the scoring in a 3-1 win
over the Snow Devils in AYSO region 97 girls under-14 play, on Saturday.
Emma Werlin and Ashley Rhinesmith also scored goals for the win. And the
defense,led by sweeper Rebecca Gordon and goalie Kally Lucas,held the
Snow Devils out of the goal in the second half.
Amy Thomas and Stephanie Vivanco assisted on the final goal that
Rhinesmith guided in.
Black Widows 5, 99% Angel 2 -- The Black Widows scored a 5-2 victory
over 99% Angel in under-12 girls action as Devin Grupe went for two
goals. Jen Peart, Amanda Laz and Alyssa Paine had one goal each. And
goalkeeper Grace Shorey with defensive support from Kristen Kahn, Marlena
Hamilton and Angela Mello held 99% Angel to just two goals. Sara Bailey,
Katie Nestel, Andrea Sosa and Amanda Laz also contributed with their
hustle.
Breakers 5, Laguna Niguel 0 -- The Newport Beach Breakers, an AYSO
Plus girls under-10 team, shut out Laguna Niguel 5-0. Shannon Rohan and
Lauren DeVoy set up goals for Kelly Heenan, Kori Erhorn and Megan
McMahon. Sara Gomez and Erin Miller each chipped in a goal to secure the
victory. Alice Cope, Stephanie Nealy, Maggie Bernay and Katy Storch added
defensive stops and made the plays for the shutout. Goalkeeper Amy Snyder
was also instrumental in the shutout.
The under-8 Wild Things’ Gigi Joseph kicked in a goal and Hannah
MacLeod controlled the Shooting Stars’ offense. Wild Things goalie
Allyson Parker stopped several shots and her teammates Lauren Wertheimer,
Hailey Schwartz and Amanda Peterson were also strong on defense. Mary
Yeager helped with an offensive charge and Mia Van Bergh supported with
all-around play.
Hot temperatures didn’t stop the White Tigers, a under-7 girls team
from playing a great game. Morgan Williams scored a goal against the Blue
Dolphins while teammate Lauren Conway led the defense as the heat was in
the mid-80s. Sadye Busby paced the White Tigers as she kept the ball
moving.
Kirsten Rohan scored six goals for the Shooting Stars as they faced
the Teenie Wahine in girls under-6 action. Hanna Van Voorhis and Maddie
Collins turned in defensive performance that led the Shooting Stars’
offensive attack and produced two goals from Jamie Darling and a goal
apiece from Alexandria Chandler and Rachel Vensand. Teammate Caitlin Cohn
had two assists.
Boys under-14: Amoeba 5, Red 0 -- The Amoeba 2000 scored in every
quarter and shut out team Red, 5-0 in the under-14 division. The Amoeba
got its third win of the season as Brian Sowers scored twice in the final
quarter.
Also, Brian Frey scored his fifth goal of the season. He now leads his
team in goals.
Josh Acosta and Niko Hendricks scored one goal each as well. Sowers
assisted Acosta on his goal. Hendricks got his goal from passing by Sean
Rowe and Sowers.
Argonauts 2, Lightning 1 -- In the Region 97 under-12 division, the Argonauts edged the Lightning, 2-1, as John Manchester scored two goals.
The defensive match featured Argonauts goalkeeper Christopher Redmond
with five saves. Jake Silverman swung momentum with a solo steal of a
Lightning offensive attack in the latter minutes of the second half.
The Argonauts also got solid defense from Jeremy Lewis an Brandon
Crowley. Andrew Kaban assisted on one of Manchester’s goals.
Blue Devils 3, Surf Dudes 1 -- The Blue Devils came from behind to win
3-1 over the Surf Dudes in the Division 4 boys, 10-11 year-olds. The Surf
Dudes scored first, but then in the second quarter, Edgar Torres got the
Blue Devils on the scoreboard. Flavio Cuevas, with an assist from
Johnathan Sutterfield, scored a goal for the lead in the third quarter.
Then Grant Jackson led a pass to Taylor Stevenson who kicked in the
insurance goal. Drew Harris, Jordan Hovis and Brandon Woods contributed
on defense for the Blue Devils. And Jamie Galey, Drew Harris and Michael
Garcia were defensive standouts for the Surf Dudes.
