The Huntington Beach Junior Lifeguards brigade that went down to

San Diego this weekend for the 2000 United States Lifesaving

Association’s Lifeguard Championships returned home Friday a successful

group, with 11 first place finishes in tow.

The four-day competition, held in the Pacific Beach area of San Diego,

along side historic Crystal Pier, continues today through Sunday, with

the Lifeguard competition.

Huntington Beach took nearly 100 athletes down to San Diego, city

Junior Lifeguard instructor, Gordon Duff, said.

In the AA Division (ages 16-17), Bret Zeldow finished first in the

Distance Run, and the duo of Alex Koller/Jane Hashimawari won the Rescue

Race.

In the A Division (14-15), Rory Kelly, who also placed second in the

Distance Swim, captured first place in the Run-Swim-Run event. Also in

the division, Huntington’s team of Elizabeth McGonagle, Kristina Eich,

Kelly, Bryce Elser, and Corey Miller, won the Swim Relay.

The B Division (12-13) competition featured a triple winner in Scott

Schauer, and a double winner in Aubrey Panis.

Schauer won the Run-Swim-Run and Distance Swim, and teamed with Panis

to win the Rescue Race. Panis, meanwhile, was the winner of the Distance

Swim.

In the C Division (9-11), Gus Hamborg took first place in the Distance

Run, Kyle Ryan (also second in the Run-Swim-Run event), won the Distance

Swim, and the Huntington squad of Daniel Morris, Alexis Schauer, Kamaile
