In front of a bemused audience, Fountain Valley Councilman Larry Crandall

presented Mayor Guy Carrozzo with his intrepid prizewinning duck,

Raymond. Crandall explained that Raymond overcame surfer interference and

navigational problems to eventually finish second in the Mayor’s Race at

the recent Huntington Beach Duck-A-Thon.

EFFECTIVE TEARS

The Huntington Beach City School District drew in a crowd of upset

parents and students at last week’s board meeting. The families wanted to

address the board about getting transfers to Sowers Middle School.

Before learning that the children on the waiting list would be accepted,

several families approached the board to air their feelings. One mom,

Tammy Santarsien, got choked up at the thought of having to send her

child to a school where the student would know nobody. Another parent

handed a napkin to Santarsien, who was trying her best to hold back the

tears.

“I’m OK. It’s just an act for effect,” she said, trying to lighten the

situation.
