SURPRISED BY AWARD: At a recent meeting, Newport Beach Sunrise
Rotarian Syd Lucas hosted Samantha Tierno and Frank Fitus, students from
Monte Vista High School who attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards
program in March. The students reported on their experiences at the camp.
Then, Samantha, on behalf of Monte Vista High School, presented an
honorary service award to a surprised Lucas for all of his hard work for
the school. Lucas reported that, with the help of Monte Vista teachers
Tom Lamar and Carol Curtis and the Ebell Club, $10,500 has been raised
for a computer reading program at the school. The Newport Beach Sunrise
Rotary Club presented a check in the amount of $2,000 to Principal Carole
Castaldo to support the training and technical support the school will
need.
ACE STUDENTS: Bing Girling of the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor
introduced three students who received the Accepted the Challenge of
Excellence award as they have overcome obstacles in their lives and
performed at a high level to finish their high school education. Jasmina
Koev and Tyler Nelson of Monte Vista High School and Chris Collins from
Newport Harbor High school received their awards and each made a few
remarks.
CLUB NEWS: The 55th annual Costa Mesa Fish Fry, sponsored by the
Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club, will be held June 2-4 at Orange
Coast College’s athletic field. The event has a Web site at o7

Green, who was drafted by the Chicago Bears and was the last pick in the
2000 NFL draft. On the Web site you will find information on Mr.
Irrelevant, the arrival party, the banquet, the golf tournament and the
ultimate tailgate party. There are also opportunities for you and your
company to send a gift for Mr. Irrelevant or the charity raffle or host a

Corinthian Yacht Club.
5:45 p.m. -- The Newport-Balboa Rotary Club will meet at Bahia Corinthian
Yacht Club to hear from Pepe Montenegro and Pepe Muniz with an update on
the Gang Outreach Program.
