Track and field: OCC sends seven to regionals

FULLERTON - Orange Coast College’s Richard Price placed second in

Friday’s Orange Empire Conference Championship’s javelin throw finals to

advance to the Southern California Regionals. This is the first day of

the conference championship at Fullerton.

Price threw 184-6 feet. He also qualified for the conference finals in

the 110-meter high hurdles. His teammate, Brendon Payne also qualified

for the regionals by throwing 162-9, which put him in fourth.

OCC’s Justin Blackard moved on to the regionals was sixth in the men’s

shot put with a toss of 42-10 1/4, the fifth best mark in the field.

In the conference preliminaries, OCC’s Carl Olsson turned in the

third-fastest time in the 110 meter high hurdles (15.23). The Pirates’

Jose Orozco qualified for the conference finals in the men’s 800 with a

time of 2:07.45.

For OCC’s women’s team, Zoila Gomez led a Pirates contingent in the

10,000 finals (37.20.80). OCC’s Bernice Carbajal and Elsa Ortega finished

second and third to qualify. The Pirates’ Nicole Hansen also nabbed a

conference championship. Her mark of 11-0 won the women’s pole vault

finals.

In the women’s conference prelims, the Pirates’ Heather Shurtleff won her

heat in the 800 race (2:38.87) and the 1,500 (5:07.77) to qualify. OCC’s

Sinforosa Orozco (5:20.08) and Veronica Campos (5:28.67) both qualified

for the 1,500 finals.
