Boys volleyball: CdM hammers Eagles

CORONA DEL MAR - Corona del Mar High’s boys volleyball team got the
Spring Break rust dusted off in Thursday’s three-game sweep over visiting
Estancia.
“It was nice to get this match in after not playing in a while,” Coach
Steve Conti said following the 15-0, 15-4, 15-8 win. “This match will
help us heading into the Santa Barbara Tournament.
Chris Shepardson led the Sea Kings (10-1, 6-0), ranked No. 2 in CIF
Southern Section Division I, with six kills.
Literally, it was all CdM, winning the opener in just under 10 minutes.
Estancia could only get one side out in all of Game 1.
The Eagles’ first kill and point of the game was by senior Brett Hellmich
early in Game 2, before CdM took control.
Strong play from junior Blake Tippett and senior Jimmy Sanders gave CdM
an 8-3 lead before senior Kent Turner’s back-to-back ace serves closed
out Game 2.
Estancia stayed in Game 3 a little longer, scoring five straight points
to tie CdM, 5-5. But the Sea Kings scored seven points in a row to lead
12-5, before a John Grod kill ended the onslaught.
CdM is back in action this morning with a 9 o’clock test with Bear River
in the opener of the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
