CORONA DEL MAR - The brooms were out in force for Corona del Mar
High’s girls track and field team in Wednesday’s 99-36 Pacific Coast
League dual meet win over visiting Costa Mesa.
The Sea Kings (8-0, 4-0 in league) took the top-three spots in six
different events, while going 1-2 in two additional events.
“The girls are racing exactly as planned heading in to the PCL
preliminaries and finals,” CdM Coach Bill Sumner said. “You’ve got your
good days and bad days. We’ve been lucky enough to have our good days at
the right times this year.”
Leading the CdM attack was Kelly Halley, Liz Morse and Jaycee Mahler,
each winning two events.
Halley took the 100-meter run (13.1) and the triple jump (31-8 1/2), Liz
Morse took both the 200 (25.6) and 400 (59.4) and Mahler was victorious
in both the 100 (17.4) and 300 (49.1) low hurdles.
For Mesa (2-2 in league), freshman Sharon Day won both the high jump
(5-6) and long jump (19-9), while taking second in the 400 (1:01.9).
“Her mark in the high jump is a new freshman school record,” Coach John
Carney said. “She was really impressive today. You guys are gonna be
writing about her a lot in the upcoming years.”
Another freshman, Beverly Aina, won the shot put (30-11), while senior Lisa Weeks was a winner in the discus (95-7 1/2).
But it was too much CdM as Jenny Cummins, Diana Hossfeld, Season Meservey
and Krisserin Canary also posted first-place marks.
Cummins won the 800 (2:24.6), Hossfeld took the 1,600 (5:19.6), Meservey
was a winner in the 3,200 (11:59.3) and Canary was a strong winner with a
personal best in the pole vault (10-0).
Next up for both schools is the PCL preliminaries and finals, both set
for Irvine High. The prelims take place Tuesday at 2 p.m., while the
finals begin at 2:45 p.m.
