Local Swimmers Shine at Junior Olympics
Six Huntington Beach athletes, each a member of the Seal Beach Swim
Club, won medals at the recent Southern California Junior Olympics.
The five-day event, hosted by the Golden West Swim Club, was held at the
Belmont Olympic Pool in Long Beach.
Eleven-year-old Scott Schauer, competing in the Boys 11-12 Division, led the way with three first-place medals. Schauer won both the 100 and 200
yard free style events, and also took the 100-yard butterfly. In
addition, he also placed second in both the 500 freestyle and the 200
individual medley, and third in the 50 freestyle.
In each of the six events, Schauer recorded National Reportable Times.
Also in the division, Tristan Friend, 12, placed fourth in both the 100
fly and 200 IM, seventh in the 500 free, ninth in the 200 free, 10th in
the 100 breaststroke, and 13th in the 50 breaststroke.
In the Girls 9-10 Division, Lindsey Buchbinder swam a National Reportable
Time in the 100 breaststroke, taking first-place honors. Buchbinder also
garnered second place in the 50 breaststoke and 13th overall in the 100
IM.
Alexis Schauer, 9, placed fourth in both the 50 and 100 free events, fifth in the 100 backstroke, and also had three, third-place finishes
(200 free, 50 backstroke, 100 IM).Twelve-year-old Megan Loo finished
eighth in the 50 backstroke, 11th in the 100 backstroke, and 12th in the
100 IM, and Kamaile Mahuna’Alii, 12, placed ninth in the 50 backstroke,
11th in the 50 free, and 16th in the 50 butterfly.
The six swimmers, along with the rest of their teammates, helped the Seal
Beach Swim Club place ninth overall among 81 teams representing swim
clubs from throughout Southern California and Nevada.
