Sailors sparkle
NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor High’s girls track and field
distinguished itself with continuing laurels Saturday, led by junior
Amber Steen, who ran a 4:58.8 in the 1,600-meters and 10:54.4 in the
3,200, both good for second-place honors at the Arroyo Distance Carnival
at Azusa Pacific.
That wasn’t all for Sailors’ track and field, however, as senior
Trevor Jones made a lot of noise at the Pasadena Games Saturday night at
Pasadena City College.
Jones won his heat of the high hurdles with a best-ever effort of
14.71 in the 110-meters event, which was third best overall.
He followed that up with a 37.51 in the 300 intermediates, winning the
event and setting a school record. It’s the best time in the state at
this point of the season in the intermediates.
It was Steen’s first time under 5:00 in the 1,600, and both marks are
Orange County bests.
At the same meet, Lynn Rinek posted a 2:24.5 in the 800, and freshman
Heather McKibben clocked a 2:27.5 in the same event.
Earlier in the day the Sailors were paced by April Ross at the Surf City
Invitational at Huntington Beach High.
The USC-bound Ross (volleyball) went 5-5 in the high jump for a
second-place honor, and was second in the triple jump at 35-11, her best
triple jump this season.
