Bruins rally back to top Lakers in double OT
The West Huntington Beach Bruins staged a dramatic comeback from 15
points down, then went double overtime to overtake the Riverside Jurupa
Lakers, 51-46, in the consolation championship game of the National
Junior Basketball boys Division 2 Championship Series playoffs Sunday.
The Bruins, who ended their season with an 11-2 record, battled back from
a 15-point deficit with just seven minutes remaining in regulation time.
The two teams were tied at 46-46 through the first overtime session.
Adam Pierce and Scott Melchert scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, and
it was Melchert who hit a crucial three-point basket in the second
overtime, where the Bruins shutout the Lakers, 5-0.
Justin Chambers, Timmy Mahoney, and Billy Silvestri all had a big hand in
the victory.

The Surf City Blues overcame a two-point halftime deficit to win the
first round NJB Sectional Tournament contest. Surf City scored just nine
first half points, all by Erin Barney, and trailed, 11-9, at the break.
Barney led all scorers with 11 points, Susie Bartolme had 12 rebounds,
and point guard Rachael Maulit, who keyed the second half rally, came up
with nine steals for the Blues (11-4).
