We asked fifth-graders at Victoria Elementary School in Costa Mesa what

they thought of the proposed changes to the school calendar. The new

schedule would shorten summer vacation and lengthen winter and spring

breaks. Here’s what they had to say:

“I think it’s a good idea because you have more vacation time during

Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.”

BROOKE WILBURN, 10

Irvine

“I don’t like the idea, because I like having the whole summer off. Plus,

you can’t really go places during Christmas, because it’s too cold and

rainy.”

ADRIANA MARTINEZ, 11

Costa Mesa

“I wouldn’t like it, because then summer would be shorter. But I probably

would remember more of what I learned that year.”DANIEL OROZCO, 11

Costa Mesa

“I would like it because then you would have more time with family on

Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Plus, you would remember more stuff

that you learned the year before.”

LAWRENCE THUNELL, 10

Costa Mesa

“I would like the alternate schedule because we go to Albuquerque during

Christmas, and we could spend more time with family. And summer would be

shorter, so I would remember more going into the next school year.”

ANA GONZALEZ, 11

Costa Mesa
