College softball: Vanguard splits
SAN DIEGO - Vanguard University’s softball team split a
doubleheader with UC San Diego on Saturday in a pair of nonconference
games.
In the first game, Vanguard pitcher Gina Liebengood pitched a four-hit
shutout as the Lions (7-6) won, 2-0, and handed UCSD (5-1) its first loss
of the year. Stacey Caggiano drove in both Vanguard runs with a single.
In the second game, Vanguard’s comeback attempt fell short, 4-3. The
Lions’ Valerie Vanaken hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to cut
UCSD’s lead to one run.
