FASHION ISLAND -- Thousands of spectators came to watch more than 4000

runners huff and trot in the 17th annual Spirit Run Sunday morning,

despite cloudy skies.

Proceeds from the run, organized by sports agent Leigh Steinberg and his

wife Lucy, will go to local public schools. Goldberg estimated this years

Spirit Run, which included seven events, raised more than $120,000.

Goldberg said in the past, schools have used money raised by the race to

buy computers and improve science, arts and physical education programs

and facilities.

Capelouto, who lives in Trabuco Canyon, shot ahead of Reed in the fourth

mile and stayed there almost until the end. But Reed, who lives in Laguna

Niguel, chugged ahead and won the race with a time of 31:48. Dave Parsel,

44, of Costa Mesa came in third place with the time of 34:25.

Heather Bray, 25, who lives in Santa Barbara, won the women’s 10K race

with a time of 37:59. She was followed by Dolly Ginter, 36, of Huntington

Beach, who finished with a time of 38:29 and Mary Schumacher, 32, of

Huntington Beach, who crossed the line at 39:54.

Huntington Beach’s Dave Schumacher, 31, won the men’s 5K event with a

time of 15:20. He was followed by Joey Gomez, 39, of Fullerton, who had a

time of 15:35. Rick Herr, 33, from Mission Viejo came in third with a
