Girls basketball: Newport gets trampled by Vaqueros
Joseph Boo
IRVINE - Thursday’s game against Sea View League leader Irvine High
was going to be tough for Newport Harbor’s girls basketball team. But few
expected it was going to be this tough. The Vaqueros hammered the
Sailors, 77-15, on the Vaqueros’ home court.
“We played a lot better against them the first time (a 59-18 loss),”
Newport Harbor Coach Gregg Savage said. “If you saw our team play
tonight, you would think we were playing our first or second game, and
not our 21st.”
Irvine (18-3, 5-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section
Division I-AA, found too many open shots not to score. Meanwhile, the
Sailors didn’t make a shot from the field until 7:56 into the game, when
Nicole Ashton hit a jumper.
Irvine employed its full-court press for the entire game, which didn’t
thrill Savage.
“I’m not happy by the fact that they used their full-court press against
our third stringers,” he said. “They scored more points in the fourth
than any other quarter.”
Ashton and Briana Brooks led the Sailors with four points. Brooks was the
only Newport player with more than one field goal, nailing two jumpers.
Evita Castillo, Lauren Sondel and Lindsey Woller each scored two for the
Sailors. Newport’s Lisa Gerlach hit one free throw and grabbed seven
rebounds.
