Reyes, Nehrig shine
Edison High senior captains Timmy Reyes and Emily Nehrig rose to
the occasion Wednesday to capture first-place in their respective surfing
divisions a the Sunset League All-Star competition held at the south side
of the Huntington Beach Pier.
The event, which does not count in the Sunset League standings, showcased
the athletes individually. The five league schools (Edison, Huntington
Beach, Marina, Fountain Valley, and Long Beach Wilson) each entered their
top seven boys surfers, top two girls surfers, and top two competitors in
both the longboard and bodyboard, in the tournament.
With 35 athletes competing in the boys surfing event, Reyes won all three
of his heats to beat out longtime rival Micah Byrne of Huntington Beach
to win the title. The Oilers’ Shaun Ward was third overall.
Nehrig, who impressed all in attendance by catching a swell near the
pier, then rode it past the judging contingent to score an 8.0 wave, won
the girls title for the second consecutive year.
“This has been a special group of seniors, and I’ve been fortunate enough
to have coached them here at Edison,” Chargers Coach Zoran Forgiarini
said. “They’ve all been awesome, and both Timmy and Emily picked up big
wins at this all-star event.”
