Andy Devine was like a bit of the Old West transplanted to Newport Beach.

The actor was famous for his role as Jingles, the sidekick of Bill Hickok

on “The Wild Bill Hickok Show” and had also acted as the comic companion

of Roy Rogers in a dozen cowboy movies.

Before finding his country niche, Devine was a professional football

player and a news photographer. He began his acting career in 1925,

appearing in almost 60 silent films.

Devine, who lived in Newport Beach for the last 20 years of his life, was

active in many area organizations, including Big Brothers of Orange

County and Hoag Hospital’s 552 club.

MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
