A 31-year-old San Pedro man drowned Friday night while working on a

sailboat in Newport Harbor, police said.

Kelly Ward and a co-worker had been working a boat at the docks of the

Balboa Yacht Club Friday evening, police said. The co-worker left the

boat, and when he retuned, Ward was missing.

After an extensive search, the Marine Department’s dive team found Ward

at the bottom of the bay, near the boat he had been working on, police

said.

Friends told police that Ward suffered from seizures, which may have

contributed to his death, according to reports. The preliminary autopsy

indicates the cause of death was drowning, police said.
