Surfing: Newport wins again
NEWPORT BEACH - Newport Harbor’s varsity surfing team claimed
another Sea View League victory with 45 points, beating out Los Alamitos
(28 points) and Laguna Beach (11 points) Thursday morning at 58th Street.
Seniors Joe Alani won the shortboard competition for the Sailors, with
teammates Pat Towersey and Ted Cook taking second and third,
respectively.
Alani’s highest-scoring wave was an 8.5 which included two off-the-lip
floaters on a four-foot set wave.
Newport’s longboarder, Alex Knost, took first place on a smooth right
by hanging 10 off the nose of his striking purple board.
Top place bodyboard honors were awarded to the spectacular maneuvers
of Josh Kast, who pulled off three el rollos.
Beth Barber, a first-year surfer, scored points for her second-place
finish in the girls division, with a long left down the line. She was
followed by Heather Clark in third place.
The surf team will begin its first post league competition with a meet
against Fountain Valley on Tuesday. Subsequent matchups will determine
seeding for the state championships in January.
