Longtime Daily Pilot Sports Editor Roger Carlson was honored earlier this

week by the Newport Harbor High girls and boys golf teams as a “friend of

high school athletics.”

The special recognition of Carlson was announced at the Newport Harbor

High girls golf banquet at the Santa Ana Country Club on Wednesday night.

Carlson, who was surprised by the honor, was presented with an engraved

crystal sculpture and a Newport Harbor High golf team jacket.

“In all the years that I’ve known him, he’s never written a negative

thing about an athlete, a coach or a referee,” golf coach Jim Warren said

of Carlson.

Warren, an NCAA wrestling referee, said he has known Carlson for 33 years

and worked with him while coaching at Estancia, Corona del Mar and

Newport Harbor high schools.

Carlson has been with the Daily Pilot since 1964, working as a sports

writer before being named editor in 1988.
