Soccer: Ameba advance to championship finals
NEWPORT BEACH - Brenden Zimmer scored a goal and had two assists to
lead the Newport Beach Ameba over the Newport Beach Mod Squad, 4-1, in
AYSO Region 97 Boys U-14 soccer playoff action Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Ameba will advance to the championship finals on
December 4.
Brandon Sowers, Edgar Zepada and Sergio Luna also scored goals for the
Ameba.
Kaiona Dutro made numerous saves in goal for the Ameba, including a
save on a Mod Squad penalty kick.
Next up for the Ameba will be Newport’s Big Red Machine Saturday at
Harper Park at 11 a.m., while the Mod Squad squares off against the
Newport Slime at 9 a.m. for the right to play the Ameba in the
championships.
In girls U-14 action:
Storm 3, Cleats & Roses 2 - Goals by Kari Truesdell, Julianne Doelz
and Kayla Shirey led the Storm to victory.
Contributing to the offense was Alyson Clark and Gemma Western, while
Elizabeth Clayton, Brittany Rausch, Kimberly Moss and goalie Sara Lambert
led the defense.
Storm 3, Navy Seals 2 - In a game decided on penalty shots, the Storm
outscored the Seals, 3-1 for the win. Kari Truesdell scored both regular
play goals.
In boys U-10 action:
Blue Vipers 2, Chargers 1 - In a game decided on a penalty kick
shootout, Henry Pyle scored on an assist from Wes Parks for the Blue
Vipers.
Timothy Regan scored the lone penalty-kick goal, while Henry Pyle shut
out the Chargers in goal to preserve the win.
Marcos Castaneda, Darren Leggett, Mark Espinoza and Max Royer
contributed to the offense, while Blake Chiapuzzo, Jason Wittman and
Santiago Castaneda led the defense.
On Sunday, the Blue Vipers lost to the Shock Waves, 2-1, with Hapke
scoring the lone goal.
In Division 4 action:
Raging Thunder 3, Beach Boys 0 - Travis Mayfield, Nathan Cramer and
Chad Stassel scored goals for the Raging Thunder.
Christian Barnett, Corbin Williamson and Kevin Eredia were solid on
defense, while Kyle Rohan, Jason Walker, Kalani Simon and Jonathan Gordan
led the midfield play.
Goalies Nick Weil and Brett Green had one save each for the Raging
Thunder.
In boys Division 5 action:
Tsunamis 4, Vipers 2 - Cameron Chase Kyle Caldwell, R.J. D’Cruz and
Cesar Amador led the Tsunamis’ offense with goals, while Hayden Navarro,
Cameron Holmes and Michael Bingham each added assists.
The defense was anchored by Rex Nelson, Eric Holland, Mitchell
Bancroft, Erik Bonn and Steven Reader, while goalie Danny Miller made the
saves to preserve the win.
In an earlier game for the Tsunamis, a 5-1 win over the Seaweeds,
Amador had three goals, while D’Cruz and Caldwell each added one goal.
Warthogs 7, Haunters 4 - Brandon Parole scored four goals to lead the
Warthogs back from a 2-0 deficit.
Chris Lewis scored two goals, while Frank Darmiento added another for
the Warthogs. Peter Nguyen and Justin Faber led the Warthogs’ defense.
Warthogs 1, Super Sonics 0 - Zach Gagnon and Chris Rizzi kept all
Super Sonics’ shots out of the goal for the shutout victory.
Chris Barnard, Sane Butera, Cody Parole, Now Gonzales and Jonathan
Summerfield led the team effort, while Brandon Parole scored the game’s
lone goal on a penalty shot for the Warthogs.
In girls division 5 action:
Blasters 3, Tidal Wave 2 - Rachel Foster scored two goals and Megan
Toman scored the game-winner for the Blasters.
Foster was assisted by Katie Lawler and Shannon Rohan, while Toman’s
goal came off a pass from Katie Kay.
Solid midfield play was turned in by Rachel Harper, Madeline Bury,
Rita Argueta, Lia Okvist, Anna Hodges and Taylor Barbara, while Amanda
Simmons and Ashley Koulouris led the defense.
Radical Rocking Raspberries 4, Red Rockets 1 - Leslie Boler and
Katrina Johnson each scored two goals to lead the Raspberries to victory.
The offensive attack was aided by Ann Darnell, Kayla Henrie and
Natalie Cedeno, while the defense was anchored by Cela O’Kieffe, Chloe
Addington-Assefi, Ashley Spaulding and goalies Abby Scheidewind and
Madison McMains.
In boys division 6 action:
In the Boomslangs’ game against Tropical Lizards, Sean Davis scored
twice, while Will Connelly added another goal. Solid midfield play was
turned in by Dom Palmer, Randall Hause and Justin Cerrato, while Andrew
Brown led the defense for the Boomslangs.
In girls division 6 action:
For the Teenie Wahines in their game against the Blue Angels, Cassie
D’Cruz was named player of the game due to her ball handling and hustle,
Blakely Ficenec and Hanna MacLeod were solid in goal and Ashley Svendsen,
Jessica Swift, Skylar Hanson each played solid team defense.
