Fountain Valley City Council wrap-up

Notes from the council’s Nov. 16 meeting. Councilwoman Laurann Cook was

absent.

ISSUE: ABANDONED PROPERTY

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The council approved $3,314.04 in expenses for eliminating

squatters at an abandoned property at 16631 Markham Street. A city

investigation revealed that accumulations of oil and grease were present

in the driveway, but the property owner did not respond to the city’s

violation notices. Apparently, the current owner has left the country. On

Oct. 14, a fire, apparently started by transients, gutted the interior of

the residence. The City Manager Ray Kromer declared the property a public

nuisance and ordered an emergency abatement. On Oct. 15, code enforcement

officers boarded up the property and continue to monitor it for safety

purposes.

ISSUE: RESIDENTIAL SLURRY SEAL

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The City Council approved a $13,112.22 increase in cost for the

city’s annual slurry seal program, which preserves and maintains

residential streets. Extra work is required in a portion of the City Hall

parking lot and the paved areas at Reservoir No. 1 and Well No. 6.

ISSUE: PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The council awarded a $50,995 contract to Malibu Pacific Tennis

Courts, Inc. to replace deteriorating playground equipment at Plavan

Park. The new equipment meets all current safety guidelines and provides

an integrated play environment that is accessible to children of all

ages.

ISSUE: WEEDING MAINTENANCE

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The council approved a one-year extension of the city’s weeding

maintenance contract and awarded $36,162 to Accurate Landscape

Maintenance Corporation for landscape maintenance along highway

sidewalks, flood control channels, planters and roads.

ISSUE: TREE TRIMMING

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The council approved a $52,651 contract for CLS Landscape

Management, Inc., for tree trimming services throughout the city.

ISSUE: INDUSTRIAL REDEVELOPMENT PLAN

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The council scheduled a public hearing for the Five Year

Implementation Plan for the City Center and Industrial Area Redevelopment

Projects. The plan will explain costs and goals of programs to eliminate

blight and increase and improve the supply of affordable housing.

ISSUE: TELEPHONE SOFTWARE UPGRADE

Vote: 4-0

Summary: The council approved the $70,140 purchase and installation of

upgraded telephone software system without a bidding process.
