local venues.

Huntington Beach

MUSEUMS

International Surfing Museum of Huntington Beach, 411 Olive Ave., between

5th and Main streets. 960-3483. Exhibits include artwork and a collection

of antique surfboards. Open noon to 5 p.m. daily, June to September. The

museum is closed Monday and Tuesday during the rest of the year.

Newland House Museum, 19820 Beach Blvd. near Adams Avenue. 962-5777. Stop

to tour this Victorian home built in 1898. Early Huntington Beach

residents William and Mary Newland lived in the house for 50 years. Open

2 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 4 p.m. weekends.

PARKS

Edison Community Center Park, Magnolia Street and Hamilton Avenue.

960-8870. Includes two lighted baseball fields, four lighted basketball

courts, a community building, six handball courts, a picnic area

including barbecue facilities, playground, restroom facilities, four

lighted tennis courts and one volleyball court.

Greer Park, McFadden Avenue near Goldenwest Street. 536-5486. Includes

one lighted baseball field, one basketball court, playground and lake.

Huntington Central Park, with entrances on Edwards, Goldenwest and

Gothard streets and Slater Avenue. 960-8847. This 300-acre park includes

a fishing lake, paved paths, equestrian trail, fitness course, horseshoe

pits, disc golf course, picnic areas and two cafes. Local plants and live

reptiles are displayed at the nature center. The park also includes the

Adventure Playground for kids.

Murdy Community Park, Norma Drive and Goldenwest Street. 960-8895.

Includes two lighted baseball fields, four lighted basketball courts, a

community building, a soccer and football field, a picnic area including

barbecue facilities, a playground, restroom facilities, four lighted

tennis courts, game room, horseshoe pits and meeting rooms.

Oak View Center Park, Oak Lane south of Warner Avenue. 960-8858. Includes

two basketball courts, a community building, picnic area, playground,

restroom facilities, a gymnasium and a game room.

Worthy Community Park, 17th and Main streets. 536-5486. Includes two

lighted baseball fields, two lighted basketball courts, lighted handball

and racquetball court, picnic area, playground and restroom facilities.

Mile Square Regional Park, on Euclid Street between Edinger and Warner

avenues. 962-5549. The 640-acre park includes two fishing lakes, 10 miles

of bicycle and hiking trails, tandem bicycle and paddle-boat rentals,

three playgrounds and 200 acres of picnic areas and barbecues. The

adjacent Fountain Valley Recreation Center (839-8611) has lighted tennis

and racquetball courts.

Adventure Playground, in Huntington Central Park at Goldenwest Street and

Talbert Avenue. 842-7442. Children ages 7 to 12 can use hammers, nails

and saws to help build treehouses with donated wood. There’s also a

rafting pond, a rope bridge, tire swings and a mud slide. For safety

reasons, children younger than 8 must be supervised by an adult, and

everyone must wear shoes. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday,

June through late August.

OTHER INTERESTING PLACES

Old World Village, 7561 Center Ave., near the San Diego Freeway between

Gothard Street and Beach Boulevard. 895-8020. Includes replicated

buildings in the Bavarian style, cobblestone streets, several German

restaurants, murals and shops that sell imported items. German festivals

are held at various times during the year. Guided tours can be arranged

by reservation, and brochures are available at information kiosks in the

village. Call for hours.

GOLF COURSES

Meadowlark Golf Course, 16782 Graham St., 846-1364. Includes pro shop,

club rentals, tournaments, PGA instruction, practice facilities and

banquets. Open dawn to dusk year-round.

City of Huntington Beach Library, 7111 Talbert Ave., between Gothard and

Goldenwest streets. 842-4481. Open 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 1 to 9 p.m.

Monday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday and Saturday.

Banning Avenue Branch Library, 9281 Banning St., 375-5005. Open noon to 9

p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5

p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Helen Murphy Branch Library, 15882 Graham St., at the corner of Edinger

Avenue. 375-5006. Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 9

a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Main Street Branch Library, 525 Main St., five blocks north of Pacific

Coast Highway. 375-5071. Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday,

and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Oak View Branch Library, 17251 Oak Lane, between Beach Boulevard and

Gothard Street near Oak View Elementary. Open 1 to 7 p.m. Monday through

Thursday, and 2 to 6 p.m. Friday. Closed Saturday and Sunday.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY

PARKS

Ellis Park, at Ellis Avenue between Canarios and Ward streets. 839-8611.

Includes basketball court, picnic area, playground and two tennis courts.

Fountain Valley Recreation Center, at Brookhurst Street and Heil Avenue.

839-8611. Includes 11 lighted baseball fields, six lighted basketball

courts, a community building, five lighted handball and racquetball

courts, two soccer and football fields, a playground, restroom

facilities, 12 lighted tennis courts, two lighted volleyball courts,

horseshoe pits and concession stands.

Los Alamos Park, at Los Alamos and Pipestone streets south of Slater

Avenue. 839-8611. Includes one basketball court, a community building,

one soccer and football field, picnic area, playground and restroom

facilities.

Mile Square Regional Park in Fountain Valley, with entrances on Euclid
