It wasn’t until 1981 that the Newport Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce got

around to naming Corona del Mar resident Robert Shelton “Citizen of the

Year.” By that time he had already put together an impressive list of

accomplishments.

Shelton had served as Newport Beach city manager, city councilman and

government relations vice president for the Irvine Co.

Shelton was also closely involved with groups like Hoag Hospital’s “552

Club,” the Newport Harbor Foundation, the Commodores Club and the

California Chamber of Commerce.

Now retired, he continues to lend a hand to the Environmental Nature

Center of Newport Harbor High.

* MILLENNIUM MOMENT celebrates the people who have made a major

contribution to the Newport-Mesa community during this century.
