Newport, Mesa earn CIF seeds
CERRITOS - Unbeaten Newport Harbor High got its respect, but the
three local football teams from the Pacific Coast League were wondering
what happened to theirs Sunday, when the CIF Southern Section playoff
pairings were announced.
Sea View League champion Newport (9-0-1), is seeded No. 2 in Division VI
and will host El Dorado (5-5) in Friday’s first round.
PCL co-champions Costa Mesa (8-2) and Corona del Mar (3-7) will host
difficult first-round tests in Division IX, where Estancia was denied the
lone at-large berth, despite having the best record among at-large
candidates.
Mesa, the No. 3 seed, will host Pacifica (6-4) Friday at Orange Coast
College, while CdM will host No. 4 seed Valencia (8-2) at a site to be
determined.
“I’m not happy,” said Estancia Coach Dave Perkins, whose 6-4 squad lost
the at-large bid to Western (5-4-1).
