FRIDAY’S GAME

The Golden West League title is on the line tonight when Ocean View

battles Tustin. The Seahawks have been involved in some high-scoring

affairs this year and have given up an average of 41 points per game in

their last five games. Not good news: Tustin’s offense has a 35-points

per game average. Expect another track meet, but the Tillers, behind

running back Branden Malcom, should rush their way to an undisputed

championship. Last year: Tustin, 63-21...

With a possible wild-card berth on the line, look for Edison High to put

it all on the line against Huntington Beach. The Oilers will be looking

to avoid a winless league season, but the Chargers’ balanced offensive

should prevail here. Last year: Teams tied, 24-24...

Fountain Valley High has been playing its best football the past two

weeks, and the Barons should continue to do so against an Esperanza team

that is fighting to stay alive for a postseason berth. The formula is

simple for Fountain Valley: a victory assures the Barons a piece of the

Sunset League championship. To get a piece of the pie, though, the Barons

will need to contain Aztec running back Tim Sonuyi and wide receiver Ryan

Murray. When you combine a tough defense with speed in the offensive

backfield, then the edge goes to Fountain Valley. These two teams are

known to stage exciting games that usually go down to the wire. The 1998

game was no exception. Last year: Esperanza, 19-17...

Marina High will be looking to gain a share of its first Sunset League

title in 13 years when the Vikings host Los Alamitos Friday. For the

Vikings to prevail against the Griffins for the second time in three

years, they’ll need to cut down on turnovers, which proved costly in last

week’s loss to Esperanza. If Marina’s option game is in top form, and the

defense returns to the form it showed in its first three league games,

then the Vikings could be tough to beat. They’ll need to find a way,

however, to stop Los Al running back Damon Johnson, and the Viking

offense will be met head-on by a Griffin defense that came up with three

turnovers and six sacks in last week’s win over Huntington Beach. Last

year: Los Alamitos, 45-21.
