Ocean View cheer squad heading for Hawaii

Selling candy. Washing cars. Even sitting in on sitcom tapings. These are

a few of the ways Ocean View High School’s Varsity Cheer Squad dreamed up

to finance a trip to Honolulu, where they will perform at the NFL’s 2000

Pro Bowl halftime show.

The cheerleaders were chosen for the Feb. 6 performance at the all-star

event after winning a “Superior Award” at a United Spirit Association

Camp in San Diego this summer.

Only two of the 15 teams competing at the camp were given the award. The

girls will be performing with hundreds of their peers from across the

nation. It is the first time that Ocean View has been invited to the

event.

Finding the money to finance the $1,200 per person trip has kept the

six-member delegation busy, squad advisor Krissy Werner said. They have

even descended en masse to TV show tapings in Los Angeles, where they

were paid $10 each to participate in the audience.

Squad members credit coach Juleah Bupp for the success of the group.

“She lets us do fun things so we are more involved with the

performances,” sophomore Jacqueline Gottlieb said. “She also makes us

work hard.”

Bupp, a petite, smiling, 19-year-old Ocean View graduate and former

member of the cheer squad, enjoys coaching today’s cheerleaders.

“It’s fun,” she said. “I like working with them.”

Although Bupp will not be able to attend the Hawaii performance, Werner

will chaperon the team.

“We are all very excited,” she said. “The kids have been working hard to

make this year’s squad great and we have received many compliments.”

The team may have been too successful.

Some of the teams’ male family relations are jealous of their daughters’

and sisters’ chance to watch the nation’s best football players compete.

But the cheerleaders members are not too concerned

“They can watch it on TV,” they giggled.
