Newport No. 1 seed, CdM No. 3 in respective CIF playoff divisions
CERRITOS - The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team begins
pursuit of an unprecedented third straight CIF Southern Section Division
I-AA championship as the No. 1 seed, while Pacific Coast League champion
Corona del Mar earned the No. 3 seed in Division III-AA.
The seven-time defending Sea View League champion Sailors (28-2 including
best-of-three tournament matches), open Tuesday, hosting the winner of
tonight’s wild-card match between Los Alamitos and Dana Hills.
CdM (13-5) begins a quest for its second III-AA crown in three seasons
Thursday, when it hosts San Jacinto, the Skyline League’s No. 3
representative.
Newport Coach Dan Glenn and CdM head man Steve Conti were both satisfied
with their team’s placement in the playoff brackets, announced Sunday at
the section office.
“We’re playing well and I like our chances,” Glenn said. “Our biggest
thing is, we play so up and down.”
Said Conti: “I like the way we’re playing now and I like our chances in
the playoffs.”
CdM was swept in best-of-three tournament action by top-seeded Bishop
Montgomery, as well as No. 2 Harvard-Westlake.
