NAC sparkles
LIDO CHANNEL - Spectators at the 17th annual Newport Autumn Rowing
Festival on Sunday were treated to ideal conditions for enjoying crew
races, and host Newport Aquatic Center found the same sort of conditions,
en route to dominating the competition.
Lining bridges across Newport Harbor and rocks along the Bay Bay,
several hundred watched as college and prep teams competed in one of the
most prestigious rowing events in the country.
Junior crew home team Newport Harbor Aquatic Center captured the most
medals at the prep level, taking first and second in Men’s Novice Eight,
first in Women’s Novice Eight, second and third in Women’s Novice Four,
in addition to third-place medals in Men’s and Women’s Varsity Eight and
Men’s Varsity Four.
“This is where our hard work pays off,” said NAC Junior Crew head
coach Rachel Rose. “Our kids have really taken it up a level this fall,
and it shows in the NARF results. We’re looking forward to a terrific
season.”
At the collegiate/open level, UC Berkeley took the gold in three
events - Men’s Varsity Eight, Men’s Novice Eight and Men’s Open Four -
with the “Giant Killers’ of Orange Coast College taking first in Women’s
Novice Eight and third in Men’s Novice Eight.
NAC rowers included doubles national champion Cooper Wessells,
finishing second to Men’s Open Single, Tim Rizzo taking third in Men’s
Lightweight Single, and Anne Kircher finishing third in Women’s
Lightweight Single.
NAC had a strong showing in the Masters events, with first-place
finishes in Men’s Master Four, and Janet Morningstar taking second in
Women’s Master Single. Fifty-six-year-old Bill Burge captured the gold in
Men’s Lightweight Master Silngle.
Next up for the NAC Junior Crew team is the San Diego Fal Crew Classic
